Gear reduction refers to speed reduction in general whether it is by traditional gear, chain and sprocket or belts. The reason that we need gear reduction is because the output speed of a motor is usually too fast for normal use.
A gear reducer refers to the mechanism by which energy output of an engine or a high-speed motor is redirected into another mechanical component in the same machine at a higher torque and a lower rotational speed.
This is achieved using different gears of different circumferences that work together to provide a rotation different from the original one. Engineers use the term "gear ratio" to describe how many revolutions one gear will spin versus another gear with which it is interlocked.
Gear reduction can have ratio between 2:1 to over 1000:1. What this means is that the input gears travel 2 times to 1000 times before the output gear travels once. This creates a highly efficient system that collects the torque power from the gears without placing undue stress on the final output gear.
